Dim Sum Yum Yum, 2023
what went on inside the head of a 5 year-old
Dim Sum Yum Yum is a multimedia projection installation that mimics the contrast between playfulness and solitude I experienced as a kid.
It is inspired by what I used to do as the only child at family dine-outs inside a Cantonese dim-sum restaurant my family always visited. As a kid, I wasn't interested in listening to the adults talk for hours so I always left the room and wandered around the restaurant every here and then. In this particular restaurant, the only entertaining place in the restaurant was a fish tank and a TV screen playing fashion runaway shows on a loop which I got so bored of watching :(
This installation has two parts: POV of fish as a kid and a distorted clock.
Dim Sum Yum Yum was exhibited at NYU Tandon’s Fall ’23 IDM Showcase.
Part 1
The first half of the media contains fish in various vibrant colors. It represents my imagined view of the fish at the restaurant.
Part 2
The second half of the media contains movements of real fish.
It reflects how the fish looks back at me and sees the same solitude that I share with the fish.
